The Institute of Environmental Studies' analysis laboratories were originally the Aquaculture Research Unit, established in 1953 and affiliated with the Faculty of Science. The Aquaculture Research Unit was formally incorporated into the Institute of Environmental Studies in 1992 and has since become the headquarters of analytical laboratories.
2. Services provided by laboratories:
2.1 Analysis of the physical and chemical properties of fresh water,wastewater and industrial.The analysis includes the following properties: pH, oxygen, conductivity, nitrates, phosphates,oils and greases, heavy metals and other elements.
2.2. Analysis of biological properties,including identification of aquatic organisms such as plant and animal loads and biomass calculation. Laboratory services include the study of other organisms such as fish, snails and aquatic grasses.
Laboratory tests are carried out on soil, plants and dairy samples.
3. Available laboratory facilities:
The laboratories have many equipment,appliances,glassware,chemicals and fieldwork equipment.Instruments include atomic absorption spectrometer, pH measuring devices,dissolved oxygen in water,washer,precision balance,microscopes,water sampling devices such as wire mesh, scaffold and light permeability meter.
4 - The floating laboratory "Malakal":
The institute is a floating plant that is used to study the freshwater environment and enables long trips in river water.The "Malakal" is unique in its kind where it allows the possibility of living and working within it for scientists and workers from Rees, Mechanic and sailors.
5. Beneficiaries of laboratory services:
Laboratory analysis services are available for undergraduate and graduate students from the University of Khartoum and other universities.The laboratories also serve government institutions and the private sector as well.
